Clubbing

Wow. The first-ever Andi Watson book I’ve been dissatisfied in.1

I believed the premise of Clubbing — London goth gets sent to stay with her grandparents in the country; she sees it as punishment, we understand it’s a possibility for her to grow up as well as discover core values — had potential. Goodness understands it’s well-worn as well as -loved in a specific type of teen novel. however both the plotting as well as the art are mediocre.

Artist Josh Howard is obviously only capable of drawing one teen girl. The lead here, Lottie, looks just like the woman from his previous book, Dead@17. Both are developed to be appropriate for posing, however when it concerns sequential art, Howard’s work is static, without any sense of motion or flow. He’s therefore finest fit for postcards, not comics, or some other style that consists of pinups on a little scale, particularly if they need closeups of large, round heads.

As for the story… it goes with a number of phases, as though the writer was believing “hang on, that’s not working, let’s try this”. very first is the great socialite introduction: Lottie lives in London, goes to hot clubs, purchases the latest, hippest fashions. much of this is told, not shown (see above for why). From her very first page, she’s full of herself, explaining herself in first-person narration as looking “like a silent film star using dissolution lip gloss”. Watson seems to have the concept that introducing something — a place, a brand name — to those possibly unfamiliar with it is equivalent to doing something interesting, a issue that extends to the country travelogue that makes up the next section of the book.

Lottie is sent to her grandparents, misses her internet, as well as wanders around narrating. possibly if I was younger as well as less familiar with both human nature as well as England I’d be much more fascinated by this. However, although the book makes a huge offer out of its foreignness, to the degree of including a translation lexicon of British phrases, I discovered everything comprehensible. possibly I’ve seen sufficient Britcoms where none of this is unusual or exotic to me. The book seems to be counting on fascination-based-on-unfamiliarity to bring over the rough patches where characters roam in as well as out with a unique lack of three dimensions. That’s particularly a issue when it concerns the young like portion.

I believe Lottie’s self-centeredness is expected to be charming, or at least have potential, however I discovered her boring. (If you such as this kind of thing, you can discover it totally free on livejournal any type of time.) as well as then there’s the ending, in which things take a definite, non-foreshadowed turn into the type of plot that fueled tons of Scooby Doo cartoons, only here, the monster is real. With much more charm, it might have been Buffy-like, however it falls short.

David Welsh, in his evaluation of this title, sees similar issues however is kinder about them. I’m most likely being as well harsh, just since I had such high really hopes provided the writer (a favorite), the setting (I’m an Anglophile, too), as well as the fish-out-of-water premise. instead of being influenced by her surroundings, at the end, Lottie is the exact same character. It’s as though she brought her metropolitan goth fantasies with her as well as required them on a location they’re not fit to.

The pattern so far with new publishing imprint Minx (although with only three releases, trying to see a pattern isn’t truly valid) appears to be that of the star trip movies: look for the even-numbered ones. The ordinary Janes was ok, Re-Gifters (review coming) was great, this was disappointing. based on this, I do have hope for the next one in the series, great as Lily.

1Caveats: I couldn’t make it with Samurai Jam, however I understood that was historical, early work. His Buffy the Vampire Slayer composing wasn’t great, however it was ok, as well as I haven’t yet checked out Paris.

BRONZE AGE: SPIDER-WOMAN #1

There are some characters back in the 70s and 80s that were mere blips on the horizon. At that time, X-Men (Claremont), Dark Knight Returns (Miller), and of course fantastic Spider-Man dominated the comic book landscape. Yes, there were other titles, but these series stole the limelight. several attempts were made to ignite female superheroes and a lot of flared up and then kind of died on the roadside.

One such super-heroine was Spider-Woman, she first appeared in marvel spotlight #32 created by Archie Goodwin (script) and Gil Kane with Sal Buscema (art) in 1977. Jessica Drew became the new Spider-Woman who had been experimented on by Hydra (Source: Wiki). This gave her the powers of superhuman strength, speed, durability, and reflexes. In addition, to some kick-butt physical abilities she had gliding, pheromone manipulation, bio-electric energy projection and of course wallcrawling. There is a new catalyst for this forgotten femme fatale, must spider speculators climb up the walls trying to find a copy? Is Jessica Drew a.k.a. Spider-Woman too nuanced to be worthy of investment?

Spider-Woman #1

The sexy Jessica Drew Spider-Woman could be a huge hit. Her first appearance in her own title was in Spider-Woman #1. The first Spider-Woman comic book was created by Marv Wolfman (script) and Joe Sinnott with Carmine Infantino (art). It had a completely new origin story and made her sexier with long black hair and a different mask. So not only are you getting first in title, but also an origin story which makes this a triple key, and a pretty solid investment. The numbers are so encouraging on this book and the cost so incidental I would suggest getting multiple copies. The current stratification of pricing goes from $200 near-mint/mint to fine minus for $30. What long-term returns can we expect from Jessica Drew in Spider-Woman #1?

Long-Term

Grade 9.8 $134 last sale 2-10-20 returned positive +10%

Grade 9.2 $65 last sale 1-25-20 returned positive +34%

Grade 5.5 $31 last sale 2-10-20 returned positive +63%

Apparently, Spider-Woman’s bio-venom blast has a long-term punch. These numbers are good in nearly all grades and that is a significant tell for additional price increases in the future. In addition, the +63% return on a $15 investment (not including taxes, CGC or shipping) is huge for a grade 5.5! There is a significant amount in the CGC Census. Apparently, the catalyst has been very much second-guessed. but keep wall-crawling upward toward profits; after all 3,717 in CGC inventory is big, but not crazy big for a Bronze Age book.

Sony Catalyst

Earlier today Sony announced plans to release another untitled marvel motion picture in 2021. According to CBR, there are rumors of a Spider-Woman solo motion picture in works at the studio. This is the best situation to buy. After all, you can own up to a 9.8 grade for as little as $200, or if that is too expensive; then try 9.6 for under $100. a lot of marvel fans have no idea about Spider-Woman unless they enjoyed the cartoons back in the day. even with that, it was not that popular of a character. but nowadays, all things female sell, especially pheromone induced love bugs like Spider-Woman.

Conclusion:

Spider-Woman #1 is a solid purchase as it is still very cheap to own. This was not a popular character until Spider-Woman’s animation, the book didn’t even last long. However, I think our times are very different. There are lots of a lot more women interested and collecting comics, even just from a service standpoint. Also, there is a lot more interest in lots of of the offshoot characters of Spider-Man. With Gwen Stacy, Silk, and even Japanese anime Spider-Robot pertaining to mind. follow Spider-Woman’s pheromones to the promised land, the land of profit.

ALBUMS OF THE WEEK: Bonny Light Horseman and game related by Cardo x Larry June x Payroll Giovanni

I had to do a two-fer this week, because I’m so excited about both of these 2020 releases. First, Americana supergroup/power trio Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson (of Fruit Bats), and Josh Kaufman (who plays with both The national and Josh Ritter) have produced a truly phenomenal collection of songs under the name Bonny Light Horsemen.

Second: another threesome, two retro-rappers and a great beatmaker. Payroll Giovanni’s 2018 album big Bossin’ volume 2 still gets regular rotation from me.  Cardo produced that record, and also made a song with a guy named Drake called God’s Plan. You might have heard of it. and Larry June is a San Fran rapper who straddles the line between 1990s gangsta funk and the modern alt-rap sound.

It doesn’t get much better than this, in my book.

DON’T miss OUT ON young AVENGERS #1

A great group of characters that marvel and Kevin Feige have been subtly setting up considering that Avengers: Endgame is a little group called the young Avengers. With these characters seeking to become a mainstay soon, I am writing to let you know… Don’t miss out on young Avengers #1!

Marvel Studios have been doing a genuinely spectacular job at laying the seeds for the future of their cinematic universe. With characters like Kang appearing in Loki and the multiverse becoming a true and legit thing, the future of the MCU appears to be rather special.

Who Are The young Avengers?

The original young Avengers team originally consisted of Iron Lad, Cassie Lang, Speed, Wiccan, Patriot, Hulkling, and Kate Bishop. The series was an instant hit, even inspiring an animated 2008 film, next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow. marvel has clearly had plans for the characters for a while, introducing them to younger audiences on Disney XD with the 2018 series, marvel Rising. Over the last few years, characters like America Chavez and Miles Morales have also appeared on the team.

Don’t miss Out on young Avengers #1

Speaking of the MCU, with the Hawkeye trailer officially dropping, audiences got their first look at Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop. With Eli Bradley introduced in Falcon & The wintertime Soldier, America Chavez in doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness, Cassie Lang in the Ant-Man films, and Wiccan and speed in WandaVision (albeit, substantially younger versions) it absolutely seems that the young Avengers are coming, whether people want them or not.

I think it is time you pick up young Avengers #1. Last year, my brother and I put $25 (USD) each into a 9.6 grade of the book, and just last month, the same grade sold for $500 (USD). A 9.8 grade of young Avengers #1 is currently going for around $1,150 (USD), and if I am being completely honest? I think the book is in for huge growth over the next 12-24 months. While that may be a lot to drop for a modern comic, in the long run, it will turn to absolute gold. At the moment, people are selling their copies like rapid-fire, and I haven’t a clue why. The value of this thing is only going to go up, so don’t miss out!

Marvel would not sprinkle these characters around if they had no plans for them; this isn’t the DCEU we’re talking about. The young Avengers are pertaining to the MCU in a big way, and I bet you don’t want to miss out.

What do you think? Do you already have your copy? let us know about it in the comments!
