BRONZE AGE: SPIDER-WOMAN #1

There are some characters back in the 70s and 80s that were mere blips on the horizon. At that time, X-Men (Claremont), Dark Knight Returns (Miller), and of course fantastic Spider-Man dominated the comic book landscape. Yes, there were other titles, but these series stole the limelight. several attempts were made to ignite female superheroes and a lot of flared up and then kind of died on the roadside.

One such super-heroine was Spider-Woman, she first appeared in marvel spotlight #32 created by Archie Goodwin (script) and Gil Kane with Sal Buscema (art) in 1977. Jessica Drew became the new Spider-Woman who had been experimented on by Hydra (Source: Wiki). This gave her the powers of superhuman strength, speed, durability, and reflexes. In addition, to some kick-butt physical abilities she had gliding, pheromone manipulation, bio-electric energy projection and of course wallcrawling. There is a new catalyst for this forgotten femme fatale, must spider speculators climb up the walls trying to find a copy? Is Jessica Drew a.k.a. Spider-Woman too nuanced to be worthy of investment?

Spider-Woman #1

The sexy Jessica Drew Spider-Woman could be a huge hit. Her first appearance in her own title was in Spider-Woman #1. The first Spider-Woman comic book was created by Marv Wolfman (script) and Joe Sinnott with Carmine Infantino (art). It had a completely new origin story and made her sexier with long black hair and a different mask. So not only are you getting first in title, but also an origin story which makes this a triple key, and a pretty solid investment. The numbers are so encouraging on this book and the cost so incidental I would suggest getting multiple copies. The current stratification of pricing goes from $200 near-mint/mint to fine minus for $30. What long-term returns can we expect from Jessica Drew in Spider-Woman #1?

Long-Term

Grade 9.8 $134 last sale 2-10-20 returned positive +10%

Grade 9.2 $65 last sale 1-25-20 returned positive +34%

Grade 5.5 $31 last sale 2-10-20 returned positive +63%

Apparently, Spider-Woman’s bio-venom blast has a long-term punch. These numbers are good in nearly all grades and that is a significant tell for additional price increases in the future. In addition, the +63% return on a $15 investment (not including taxes, CGC or shipping) is huge for a grade 5.5! There is a significant amount in the CGC Census. Apparently, the catalyst has been very much second-guessed. but keep wall-crawling upward toward profits; after all 3,717 in CGC inventory is big, but not crazy big for a Bronze Age book.

Sony Catalyst

Earlier today Sony announced plans to release another untitled marvel motion picture in 2021. According to CBR, there are rumors of a Spider-Woman solo motion picture in works at the studio. This is the best situation to buy. After all, you can own up to a 9.8 grade for as little as $200, or if that is too expensive; then try 9.6 for under $100. a lot of marvel fans have no idea about Spider-Woman unless they enjoyed the cartoons back in the day. even with that, it was not that popular of a character. but nowadays, all things female sell, especially pheromone induced love bugs like Spider-Woman.

Conclusion:

Spider-Woman #1 is a solid purchase as it is still very cheap to own. This was not a popular character until Spider-Woman’s animation, the book didn’t even last long. However, I think our times are very different. There are lots of a lot more women interested and collecting comics, even just from a service standpoint. Also, there is a lot more interest in lots of of the offshoot characters of Spider-Man. With Gwen Stacy, Silk, and even Japanese anime Spider-Robot pertaining to mind. follow Spider-Woman’s pheromones to the promised land, the land of profit.
