viewing the sneak peek for Batman: Gotham by Gaslight on the Batman and Harley Quinn disc made me anticipate it much more than I have any of the original DC universe animated films in a while.
Comic fans know the story, originally told as an Elseworlds by Brian Augustyn and the well-chosen Mike Mignola: a steampunk Batman chases Jack the Ripper. Here’s the plot description offered by the studio:
Batman: Gotham By Gaslight takes place at the turn of the century as America’s continued industrial revolution is to be showcased at a World’s fair hosted by Gotham City. but while the world prepares to see the glittery glory of Gotham’s technological advances, there is a killer loose in the city’s darkest shadows. Preying on the city’s women, this killer is as accurate as he is cruel. As police Commissioner James Gordon tries to calm the fears of Gotham’s citizens concerning the butcher called Jack the Ripper, the masked vigilante Batman enacts his own detective work — with the help of confident, capable Selina Kyle — to stop the Ripper’s murderous spree. see a world in flames as the notorious serial killer’s controlled savagery meets the calculated stealth of the Dark Knight.
The trailer reveals that this, like The killing Joke movie, will be rated R.
Batman is voiced by Bruce Greenwood (Batman: Under the Red Hood), while Selina is played by Jennifer Carpenter. Commissioner Gordon is Scott Patterson (Gilmore Girls) and Alfred is Anthony Head (Buffy!). The script was written by Jim Krieg (Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox), and Sam Liu directs.
The film will be out February 6, 2018, in these formats:

Plus audio commentary by executive producer Bruce Timm, director Sam Liu, and writer Jim Krieg; vault episodes of “Showdown” from Batman: The Animated series and “Trials of the Demon!” from Batman: The brave and the Bold; and a sneak peek at the next DC universe Movie, suicide Squad: hell To Pay.
