I had to do a two-fer this week, because I’m so excited about both of these 2020 releases. First, Americana supergroup/power trio Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson (of Fruit Bats), and Josh Kaufman (who plays with both The national and Josh Ritter) have produced a truly phenomenal collection of songs under the name Bonny Light Horsemen.
Second: another threesome, two retro-rappers and a great beatmaker. Payroll Giovanni’s 2018 album big Bossin’ volume 2 still gets regular rotation from me. Cardo produced that record, and also made a song with a guy named Drake called God’s Plan. You might have heard of it. and Larry June is a San Fran rapper who straddles the line between 1990s gangsta funk and the modern alt-rap sound.
It doesn’t get much better than this, in my book.
