Dynamite celebrates 10 years!

July 21, 2014, Mt. Laurel, NJ:  Dynamite entertainment is inviting fans everywhere to join the event with a extremely special army of Darkness tale, devoted by its problem number to honor the year of the original cult film’s release. army of Darkness #1992.1 will be a commemorative square-bound edition, featuring short stories of demon-hunting hero Ash Williams written by the series’ biggest fear talents of problems past, including Steve Niles, Elliott Serrano, Cullen Bunn, James Kuhoric, as well as Mike Raicht.

Army of Darkness #1992.1 celebrates the history of Dynamite’s publishing by inviting many of its most notable writers to contribute short vignettes.  Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) is the most recent contributor to the saga, with tales of medieval fear in Ash as well as the army of Darkness as well as army of Darkness: Ash gets Hitched.  Elliott Seranno contributed such story arcs as “Hail to the Queen, Baby” as well as “The King is Dead.”  James Kuhoric (Six Million dollar Man: season 6) composed a few of the earliest Dynamite adventures, including “Shop ‘Til You decrease Dead” as well as “Army of Darkness Vs. Reanimator.” Mike Raicht (Dark Shadows) contributed the storylines “Hellbillies as well as Deadnecks” as well as “Home wonderful Hell.”

Meanwhile, Cullen Bunn is a celebrated comic book author (Deadpool, Magneto, Sixth Gun) dealing with army of Darkness for the very first time, as well as setting up its hero for the next adventure.  As senior Editor Joseph Rybandt says, “Army of Darkness will always have a special location in our collective hearts, as ten years ago, it was our extremely very first title.  We’ve thrown whatever at Ash in the interim, however we’re throwing him into area next. as well as everything starts here.”

“I’m proud to be a part of this incredible celebration, however reality be told, they couldn’t have done it without me.” specifies Ashley J. Williams, star of the movie as well as comics.  “When they suggested the #1992.1, I said, that seems great!  I told them that this was the greatest numbered comic of all time.  They specified that one more business had done a #1 Million, as well as shotgun in hand I explained to them exactly how that was a stunt as well as this is the genuine deal, so all I can state is, buy it, you’ll like it.”

“What much better method to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Dynamite than with an incredible over-sized army of Darkness story,” stated Nick Barrucci, CEO as well as publisher of Dynamite Entertainment. “This special is in time for our 10th anniversary as well as serves as a holiday present to our fans!  Comics as well as movie fans alike will not want to miss this issue.”

NOSTALGIA kills by JILL SOBULE

Jill Sobule has been a one-hit question when her single “I Kissed a Girl” broke in the 1990s. She’s been an indie actress. She’s been a crowdfunding trailblazer, getting her fans to pay for her 2009 album California Years. She’s been a queer-rights folksinger.

So when she tells you nostalgia kills, she understands what she’s speaking about. At a point in her life as well as occupation when a lot of people begin looking into the rear view mirror as well as figuring out where they peaked, Sobule has released a collection of tunes about breaking up as well as battling of what she loves, as well as it’s quickly her finest album in years—maybe ever. She took eight years to compose these songs, as well as it shows. There are a number of tunes on right here that will break your heart. Others will make you believe back to when you last got your heart broken. perhaps it’s since I’m in the middle of the progressive erosion of my own marriage, however a tune like “I put My Headphones On,” about a lady “back in the guilt cage” developed for her by her lover, who just puts headphones on to block everything out…Wow.

There are likewise a few covers. She takes The five Stairsteps’ Ooh kid as well as transforms it from a tune of motivation to a tune of determined hope, as well as she does an particularly peaceful as well as acoustic cover of a tune she’s done before: Warren Zevon’s Don’t let us get Sick, one of the saddest as well as a lot of powerful like tunes ever written.

This album gets my greatest recommendation.

UNDERVALUED & OVERLOOKED COMICS – SILVER AGE

Hello, and welcome back to our weekly column where we take a look at a couple undervalued or overlooked comics from one of each of four comic book eras – golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, and Copper Age – all in an attempt to find value for you, the comic book investor and collector.  Whether you’re a high roller or a bargain shopper, there will be something in here for everyone.  This week, it’s the Silver Age.  Let’s get started.

First appearance of Aqualad

The disparity between DC and marvel Silver Age comics continues to grow.  As prices go up, marvel books rise faster.  then when prices decline, DC books fall in a steeper trajectory.  Such is the case for adventure Comics #269, the overlooked and undervalued first appearance of Aqualad.  Now, I’m sure this statement will cause some guffaws out there in collectorland; this is, after all, Aqualad I’m talking about.  I’ll admit to finding some humor in the situation as well.  However, hear me out.

Aqualad, although admittedly a B-rate DC hero, is still a hero nonetheless and a founding member of the teen Titans.  In a world where first appearances of marvel B-rate villains command top dollar, certainly there should be some love for Garth, aka Aqualad.

There are only 103 copies of adventure Comics #269 in the CGC census, with the highest grade coming in at 9.2.  Here’s a look whatsoever of the sales of graded copies of this book so far in 2022:

That’s it.

The highest price paid for this book was $3,050 for a 9.0 copy in a fixed-price eBay sale in September 2020.  now let’s compare this to the debut of a marvel B-rate villain like, I don’t know, let’s say… the Wizard.  here are all the sales of unusual Tales #102 so far this year:

Same number of copies sold, and not a remarkable difference in the prices.  I can purchase that there are some collectors out there who rate the Wizard as being roughly equal in significance to Aqualad. but if that’s the case, why are there nearly triple the number of copies of unusual Tales #102 in the census (308 to be precise) as adventure Comics #269?  and why is the top price paid for a copy of the Wizard’s first appearance 145% higher – $7,500 for a 9.4 Pacific Comics Pedigree copy sold in a Heritage auction in November 2021 – than the highest price paid for the first appearance of Aqualad?

Sure, it’s a pedigree copy and in a higher grade.  but there are eight 9.4 graded copies of unusual Tales #102 floating around out there and only three 9.2 graded copies – the top grade – of adventure Comics #269.  I’ve said it before and I’m sure I will say it again:  if you’re searching for solid Silver Age investments, there’s no better place to look than DC keys.  adventure Comics #269 is one of those keys.

Later issues of Nick Fury

Despite everything I said above, there is still some value to be found in marvel Silver Age comic books.  Not all are overpriced, and numerous of the overlooked and underpriced ones are solid comics that are worth including in your collection.  There are few marvel Silver Age series that completists can chase quite like Nick Fury, agent of SHIELD.  comparable series in terms of number of issues in the run like Silver Surfer or doctor unusual have always been – in the case of the former – and much more recently – in the case of the latter – out of reach from a financial standpoint for numerous collectors.

In particular, the later issues after Jim Steranko had left the series and was no longer contributing covers, and before the series had looked to reprints beginning with Nick Fury, agent of shield #16, are among the most undervalued and overlooked Silver Age marvel comics to be found.  Let’s take a look at Nick Fury, agent of shield #11 as an example.

There are only 158 graded copies in the CGC census, an extraordinarily low number for a Silver Age marvel comic.  the most recent sale?  A 9.0 graded copy selling for a slashed $110 on June 10.  The highest price paid?  $837 for a 9.8 copy signed by Stan Lee, which sold in a Heritage auction in August 2016.

This is an extremely economical comic as are all of the later issues of this series.  They’re also good reads as well, much much more pleasurable than unusual Tales #102.

Next Week: Copper Age Undervalued & Overlooked

Well, that’s all we have time for this week.  join us next week as we take a look at some undervalued and overlooked Copper Age comics.

Clubbing

Wow. The first-ever Andi Watson book I’ve been dissatisfied in.1

I believed the premise of Clubbing — London goth gets sent to stay with her grandparents in the country; she sees it as punishment, we understand it’s a possibility for her to grow up as well as discover core values — had potential. Goodness understands it’s well-worn as well as -loved in a specific type of teen novel. however both the plotting as well as the art are mediocre.

Artist Josh Howard is obviously only capable of drawing one teen girl. The lead here, Lottie, looks just like the woman from his previous book, Dead@17. Both are developed to be appropriate for posing, however when it concerns sequential art, Howard’s work is static, without any sense of motion or flow. He’s therefore finest fit for postcards, not comics, or some other style that consists of pinups on a little scale, particularly if they need closeups of large, round heads.

As for the story… it goes with a number of phases, as though the writer was believing “hang on, that’s not working, let’s try this”. very first is the great socialite introduction: Lottie lives in London, goes to hot clubs, purchases the latest, hippest fashions. much of this is told, not shown (see above for why). From her very first page, she’s full of herself, explaining herself in first-person narration as looking “like a silent film star using dissolution lip gloss”. Watson seems to have the concept that introducing something — a place, a brand name — to those possibly unfamiliar with it is equivalent to doing something interesting, a issue that extends to the country travelogue that makes up the next section of the book.

Lottie is sent to her grandparents, misses her internet, as well as wanders around narrating. possibly if I was younger as well as less familiar with both human nature as well as England I’d be much more fascinated by this. However, although the book makes a huge offer out of its foreignness, to the degree of including a translation lexicon of British phrases, I discovered everything comprehensible. possibly I’ve seen sufficient Britcoms where none of this is unusual or exotic to me. The book seems to be counting on fascination-based-on-unfamiliarity to bring over the rough patches where characters roam in as well as out with a unique lack of three dimensions. That’s particularly a issue when it concerns the young like portion.

I believe Lottie’s self-centeredness is expected to be charming, or at least have potential, however I discovered her boring. (If you such as this kind of thing, you can discover it totally free on livejournal any type of time.) as well as then there’s the ending, in which things take a definite, non-foreshadowed turn into the type of plot that fueled tons of Scooby Doo cartoons, only here, the monster is real. With much more charm, it might have been Buffy-like, however it falls short.

David Welsh, in his evaluation of this title, sees similar issues however is kinder about them. I’m most likely being as well harsh, just since I had such high really hopes provided the writer (a favorite), the setting (I’m an Anglophile, too), as well as the fish-out-of-water premise. instead of being influenced by her surroundings, at the end, Lottie is the exact same character. It’s as though she brought her metropolitan goth fantasies with her as well as required them on a location they’re not fit to.

The pattern so far with new publishing imprint Minx (although with only three releases, trying to see a pattern isn’t truly valid) appears to be that of the star trip movies: look for the even-numbered ones. The ordinary Janes was ok, Re-Gifters (review coming) was great, this was disappointing. based on this, I do have hope for the next one in the series, great as Lily.

1Caveats: I couldn’t make it with Samurai Jam, however I understood that was historical, early work. His Buffy the Vampire Slayer composing wasn’t great, however it was ok, as well as I haven’t yet checked out Paris.

BRONZE AGE: SPIDER-WOMAN #1

There are some characters back in the 70s and 80s that were mere blips on the horizon. At that time, X-Men (Claremont), Dark Knight Returns (Miller), and of course fantastic Spider-Man dominated the comic book landscape. Yes, there were other titles, but these series stole the limelight. several attempts were made to ignite female superheroes and a lot of flared up and then kind of died on the roadside.

One such super-heroine was Spider-Woman, she first appeared in marvel spotlight #32 created by Archie Goodwin (script) and Gil Kane with Sal Buscema (art) in 1977. Jessica Drew became the new Spider-Woman who had been experimented on by Hydra (Source: Wiki). This gave her the powers of superhuman strength, speed, durability, and reflexes. In addition, to some kick-butt physical abilities she had gliding, pheromone manipulation, bio-electric energy projection and of course wallcrawling. There is a new catalyst for this forgotten femme fatale, must spider speculators climb up the walls trying to find a copy? Is Jessica Drew a.k.a. Spider-Woman too nuanced to be worthy of investment?

Spider-Woman #1

The sexy Jessica Drew Spider-Woman could be a huge hit. Her first appearance in her own title was in Spider-Woman #1. The first Spider-Woman comic book was created by Marv Wolfman (script) and Joe Sinnott with Carmine Infantino (art). It had a completely new origin story and made her sexier with long black hair and a different mask. So not only are you getting first in title, but also an origin story which makes this a triple key, and a pretty solid investment. The numbers are so encouraging on this book and the cost so incidental I would suggest getting multiple copies. The current stratification of pricing goes from $200 near-mint/mint to fine minus for $30. What long-term returns can we expect from Jessica Drew in Spider-Woman #1?

Long-Term

Grade 9.8 $134 last sale 2-10-20 returned positive +10%

Grade 9.2 $65 last sale 1-25-20 returned positive +34%

Grade 5.5 $31 last sale 2-10-20 returned positive +63%

Apparently, Spider-Woman’s bio-venom blast has a long-term punch. These numbers are good in nearly all grades and that is a significant tell for additional price increases in the future. In addition, the +63% return on a $15 investment (not including taxes, CGC or shipping) is huge for a grade 5.5! There is a significant amount in the CGC Census. Apparently, the catalyst has been very much second-guessed. but keep wall-crawling upward toward profits; after all 3,717 in CGC inventory is big, but not crazy big for a Bronze Age book.

Sony Catalyst

Earlier today Sony announced plans to release another untitled marvel motion picture in 2021. According to CBR, there are rumors of a Spider-Woman solo motion picture in works at the studio. This is the best situation to buy. After all, you can own up to a 9.8 grade for as little as $200, or if that is too expensive; then try 9.6 for under $100. a lot of marvel fans have no idea about Spider-Woman unless they enjoyed the cartoons back in the day. even with that, it was not that popular of a character. but nowadays, all things female sell, especially pheromone induced love bugs like Spider-Woman.

Conclusion:

Spider-Woman #1 is a solid purchase as it is still very cheap to own. This was not a popular character until Spider-Woman’s animation, the book didn’t even last long. However, I think our times are very different. There are lots of a lot more women interested and collecting comics, even just from a service standpoint. Also, there is a lot more interest in lots of of the offshoot characters of Spider-Man. With Gwen Stacy, Silk, and even Japanese anime Spider-Robot pertaining to mind. follow Spider-Woman’s pheromones to the promised land, the land of profit.

Cyber force #1

Overseen by creator Marc Silvestri (WITCHBLADE), writers Matt Hawkins (WARFRAME, believe TANK) as well as Bryan hill (BONEHEAD, POSTAL) as well as artist Atilio Rojo (SAMARITAN) will relaunch the traditional series CYBER force this March.

To protect the future, what will we become?

In a contemporary world where humanity is defined by the innovation it creates, a terrorist strikes at the heart of human progress. one of the few survivors of the assault is a guy named Morgan Stryker.

Mortally wounded, Stryker’s life is saved by his employers…but the cost of his survival might be his humanity itself.

“I’ve always liked CYBER FORCE,” stated Hawkins. “These heroes are more technologically based, as well as we’re extremely close to transhumanism as it is! This story has a philosophical slant to it that is extremely appropriate to the altering times we’re in.”

“CYBER force is what very first interested me in top Cow,” stated Hill. “My very first pitch to Matt was set in that universe. When Marc produced it, ideas of transhumanism as well as its impact on society were just esoteric theory, however now we online in that reality. We’re a types utilizing innovation to ‘perfect’ ourselves, however in what image? What occurs when development stops being a natural process as well as becomes a mechanized one? What is the future of this new humanity? I hope to engage these concepts in CYBER FORCE…and strike a great deal of things apart in flame as well as steel.”

“It is a special honor as well as an enormous enjoyment for me to take part in this project,” added Rojo. “I will provide my best, as always!”

CYBER force will introduce in March 2018.

DON’T miss OUT ON young AVENGERS #1

A great group of characters that marvel and Kevin Feige have been subtly setting up considering that Avengers: Endgame is a little group called the young Avengers. With these characters seeking to become a mainstay soon, I am writing to let you know… Don’t miss out on young Avengers #1!

Marvel Studios have been doing a genuinely spectacular job at laying the seeds for the future of their cinematic universe. With characters like Kang appearing in Loki and the multiverse becoming a true and legit thing, the future of the MCU appears to be rather special.

Who Are The young Avengers?

The original young Avengers team originally consisted of Iron Lad, Cassie Lang, Speed, Wiccan, Patriot, Hulkling, and Kate Bishop. The series was an instant hit, even inspiring an animated 2008 film, next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow. marvel has clearly had plans for the characters for a while, introducing them to younger audiences on Disney XD with the 2018 series, marvel Rising. Over the last few years, characters like America Chavez and Miles Morales have also appeared on the team.

Don’t miss Out on young Avengers #1

Speaking of the MCU, with the Hawkeye trailer officially dropping, audiences got their first look at Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop. With Eli Bradley introduced in Falcon & The wintertime Soldier, America Chavez in doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness, Cassie Lang in the Ant-Man films, and Wiccan and speed in WandaVision (albeit, substantially younger versions) it absolutely seems that the young Avengers are coming, whether people want them or not.

I think it is time you pick up young Avengers #1. Last year, my brother and I put $25 (USD) each into a 9.6 grade of the book, and just last month, the same grade sold for $500 (USD). A 9.8 grade of young Avengers #1 is currently going for around $1,150 (USD), and if I am being completely honest? I think the book is in for huge growth over the next 12-24 months. While that may be a lot to drop for a modern comic, in the long run, it will turn to absolute gold. At the moment, people are selling their copies like rapid-fire, and I haven’t a clue why. The value of this thing is only going to go up, so don’t miss out!

Marvel would not sprinkle these characters around if they had no plans for them; this isn’t the DCEU we’re talking about. The young Avengers are pertaining to the MCU in a big way, and I bet you don’t want to miss out.

What do you think? Do you already have your copy? let us know about it in the comments!
