CLOAK as well as DAGGER: THE great news as well as THE poor news

Light as well as darkness. like the complementary characters of Cloak as well as Dagger, right here we bring you both great as well as poor news about the market for Cloak as well as Dagger’s crucial comic books. First, the poor news: They are all headed for a huge downturn. However, the great news: We’ve likely caught it before the pain.

THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #64

Starting things off, the famous duo of Cloak as well as Dagger made their 1st appearance in The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 (1982); sales data for the book graded CGC 9.8 is shown below. Sales costs for The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 jumped up in late 2015 surrounding the establishing news of the Cloak & Dagger television series. In the instant weeks, the book at CGC 9.8 offered in a large variety from approximately the low-$600s to $400. Surprisingly, this volatility stayed bit altered over the program of the last four years. outside of two higher-priced sales this past winter, The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 has been difficult stuck in the exact same range. This volatility with the high market value warrants checking out the other market habits crucial Cloak & Dagger books; which complies with below. Additionally, a lot more about the recent patterns (post-TV series cancellation) will likewise be addressed.

CLOAK as well as DAGGER #1

The next Cloak as well as Dagger crucial to be looked at is the very first self-titled Cloak as well as Dagger #1 (1983); whose sales for CGC 9.8 copies are shown below. While the magnitude of sales costs for Cloak as well as Dagger #1 is much lower than the above book, the market habits is essentially mirrored, however with one crucial difference. The motions are similar, however the timing of the motions are delayed. The tendency of The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 to not just behave the exact same as Cloak as well as Dagger #1, however with a few weeks delay is a extremely curious element that might have assisted a speculator front-run the former book. Both the upwards motions as well as now possibly, the downwards movement…

OUTLOOK

The most current event to influence the market of all Cloak as well as Dagger comic books is the recent (Oct 2019) as well as official cancellation of the Cloak & Dagger television series. even before the cancellation announcement, installing worry had already shown itself in the market for both books. There has been a considerable decrease in volume for Cloak as well as Dagger #1 sales. a lot more recently, sales costs for The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 has noticeably weakened. You can see this modification in the sales data below; on the left is Cloak as well as Dagger #1, on the ideal is The Spectacular Spider-Man #64. notice the time delay between the two books for this modification in sentiment to the negative.

The possibility of an prolonged weakening in the Cloak as well as Dagger market is additionally supported by the lack of purchasers for the crucial comics of supporting characters. The major antagonist that was exposed at the end of season 1 was Mayhem; whose very first appearance book of Cloak as well as Dagger #5 (1986) has failed to establish to a market with larger sales volume as well as value. In a similar situation, D’Spayre who is the primary villain of season 2; his very first appearance book of marvel Team-Up #68 (1978) is likewise underperforming.

Overall, the market for Cloak as well as Dagger’s two greatest crucial comic books is likely on the cusp of a major step downwards. It would be tough to phone call the cost bottom; just keep in mind the cost levels for both The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 as well as Cloak as well as Dagger #1, before the TV bump.  With four years of failure to break above the exact same cost range, as well as without any positive news in the near future…

Look out below.

DIACON PANTHERS-“Ride Again”

Diacon Panthers’ “Make It feel Better” was the 16th best album of 2008.  An extraordinary debut, and there’s no use arguing with me.  just ask my wife.
The band is back, with the aptly titled, “Ride Again,” recorded over just three days back in December 2008.  It is (or will be soon) available on Bandcamp as a pay-what-you-want download, and all of you should show the guys some love.  Seriously.  You won’t regret it.

The Diacon-Panthers need a big break. I hereby call upon all my fellow bloggers to write about this band. They are very friendly.  If you need it, I’ll send you their e-mail address. These guys have rocked me to my core, in a way few band submissions ever do. Truly.

I’ve done a brief interview, but before we get started, let me introduce you to who they are and give you a few tastes of their music:

Natan Diacon-Furtado – vocals, guitar
Greg given – guitar
Jeremy given – bass, Fender Rhodes (Jeremy and Greg are brothers)
Charlie Henschen – drums

From “Ride Again”:

Curses (yousendit)

Hot Grey Lips (yousendit)

From their debut, “Make it feel Better”

Tennessee dancing nights (yousendit)

Now, let’s talk . . .

BP: First, congratulations on a great second album.  Often, a sophmore release shows off a band’s weaknesses, but this one is a tremendous improvement over “Make It feel Better” which was, itself, awesome.  any Lennon/McCartney type feuds going on?  If not, are there at least a few Takei/Shatner feuds?

Greg: Well, as Natan is the principle songwriter, there really isn’t an opportunity for a Lennon/McCartney kind of thing. However, we are starting to work in some of Jeremy’s songs, so this could emerge…

Natan: If we have any feud, it probably looks something like the feud between Jared and Michael Phelps. (Attaches link.)

BP:  Overall, this second album seems more primal—and far more emotional—than your first.  Your first was basically a collection of strong songs, but this feels like an album.  Did you conceive “Ride Again” as big Idea, or were the songs written individually?

Natan: These songs did all come about during an emotionally intense period for me which resulted in (what I thought at the time was) really crippling writer’s block where I would just work on one line of one song for months at a time. In the end though, it seems like that payed off as I think you can feel every hour in every line. That being said, this block resulted in us going into the studio with really compressed, thoroughly worked out bits that the rest of the boys helped expand. in that way, I hope you hear just as much looseness as intense detail.

BP: There is definitely an improvised feel, in addition to the precision.  That probably comes from you guys being a well-knit band.  how did you record it?

Greg: Natan basically presented us with the main line to each song 3 days before we began recording, and the rest of us worked with Natan on fleshing out these lines into complete songs. With the exception of “My Friends,” which we had begun working on while we were on tour in support of “Make it feel Better,” this EP was built from basic ideas, rehearsed, recorded, and done in about 6 days. So, in a sense, while Natan spent a long time conceiving these songs, each came into its own all at the same time, as we were there in the studio, putting the tracks on tape. I suspect this incredibly compressed writing and recording process results in the unity of the record.

BP: The jammy end of “Curses” almost sounds like you were making it up as you went along.  until the magnificent bridge into “My Friends.”  Did you construct the songs as a pair, or did you just found that they fit that way?

Natan: That was all Scott in the studio–he paired the songs like that. but again, I was already a guy who sticks to keys and progressions he knows. I think this record does that to an extreme in a way that works. but yeah, total accident, which I hope we can promise more of.

BP: Are any of you fans of the Grateful Dead, or any other “jam” bands?

Natan: I am a huge fan of American Beauty, but an even bigger fan of Anthem of the Sun. growing up, my dad had pretty much every Dead record on vinyl and I slowly began to steal them from him. Besides that, I have an undying love for bands that are ok with devolving into ambiance, where there’s a certain comfort in allowing a constant pulse to form from which the listener can fade away. Bands like Codeine, and styles like Chopped n’ Skrewed. I think they’re much closer to the work the Grateful Dead did than “modern” Jam bands– that I can’t really handle.

Greg: Man, you have an ear. Natan neglects to mention that the rest of us in the band were in a jam band for 4 years through high school. While most kids our age were putting together shitty pop-punk and hardcore bands, we were trying to decide which widespread Panic song to cover. I think we’re all glad that we moved on from that phase in our lives long ago, but it did teach us a thing or twonull

CORNERSHOP-“Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast”

Cornershop has never been peaceful about the financial obligation they owe to The Beatles, as well as their latest, “Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast,” continues in that grand tradition, with lots of pop sitar, short as well as tight tunes, as well as 1960s riffs.  Tjinder Singh as well as Ben Ayres are one of the very best songwriting teams around today, as evidenced by this great-from-beginning-to-end release. I even delighted in the upbeat cover of Bob Dylan’s “The Mighty Quinn,” notwithstanding that it seems a bit like The Grateful Dead’s own cover of that tune as well as truly doesn’t break any type of new ground.  however the genuine tour-de-force is the 16-minute “The Turned-On Truth,” which tranforms the “Brimful of Asha” riff into a gospel tune, occupying at the same time rock as well as roll seems perfected by Van Morrison, George Harrison, Curtis Mayfield, Joe Cocker, Merle Saunders, and, of course, Cornershop themselves.  (They’ve been around for practically two decades, so why shouldn’t they now be thought about influential?)

If you’re one of the fans who was eagerly awaiting this release, be happy.  If you’ve never heard Cornershop before (or are only familiar with “Asha”), be extremely happy.  This will be a record you’ll want to experience once again as well as again.

Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders

I liked it! It’s fun! Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders is my new favorite original DC animated movie, because it kept my interest throughout.

In case you missed seeing the trailer, this feature-length cartoon is set in the “Batman ’66” world, based on the TV show, with the original voices of Adam West as Batman, Burt Ward as Robin, and Julie Newmar as Catwoman.

This film is, as is typical of those in the past, 80 minutes or so long, but it kept going in unexpected directions and providing amusing new visuals. things that seem thrown in just because turn out to mean more later on. about halfway through, the plot takes a ridiculous but oddly scary turn with a pairing of unusual allies. As written by Michael Jelenic & James Tucker, the different plots make the movie feel like a mini-marathon of episodes, and I liked the way it all came back together. I couldn’t help seeing some of the events as a comment on how wrong some takes on Batman have been over the years.

The opening credits nicely evoke both classic comic covers and the original cartoon-style credits — although these are actually animated with movement and such.

It’s so terrific to hear the familiar voices. Sure, they sound older, but heck, so am I. and the new voices hit the key points, too. The Joker (Jeff Bergman) has the giggle down. The Penguin (William Salvers) has the wac-wacs. The Riddler (Wally Wingert) has the demented laugh. We even see Aunt Harriet (Lynne Marie Stewart)!

The movie opens with Bruce Wayne and his ward Dick Grayson settling down to watch “Gotham Palace”, “everyone’s favorite variety show”. “Even crime fighters need mindless entertainment sometimes,” says Bruce. However, a quiet evening at home is not to be. The four big Bat-villains — the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, and Catwoman — have teamed up for a nefarious scheme.

As you might guess, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders is full of kitsch, both from the original TV show — as when they climb the walls by walking sideways — and the culture of the period — including TV dinners and a mod club with dancers in cages.

The movie fetishizes the details, with extra-long glamour shots of the Batmobile, and the world’s longest driveway out of the Batcave (with echoes of get Smart).

Still, I loved the many nods and homages. For instance, when Batman faces off with the bad guys and gets hit in the head, he temporarily sees three Catwomen —- inspired by the different actresses who played her.

The original show was talky, because action was expensive and difficult, but here, they have the opposite problem. getting the limited animation to match up to the dialogue is what’s tricky.

Likenesses are great, but the movement is jerky. and because no one has to pay stuntmen, there are more fights, and those involve the villains themselves instead of henchmen.

Stick around for the credits to see the Batusi done over a jazzy version of the TV show theme.

Special Features
“Those Dastardly Desperados” (10 minutes) covers the villains, including clips from the voice cast and panels from the Batman ’66 comic. It’s surprisingly interesting.

“A classic Cadre of Voices” (10 min) elaborates on the voice work and building the right tone for the characters and material. Weirdly, I never saw casting director Wes Gleason identified on screen when he talks, but good for him getting all these folks together.

Also included are sneak peeks for Batman vs. Robin and son of Batman (10 minutes each). The disc starts up with a trailer for the suicide Squad movie, which, like these promos, is a mismatch in tone and audience appeal. That’s the biggest problem with liking this movie — I can rewatch the TV show, but I wish there was more new product with the same light-hearted appeal.

That’s why I’m excited to hear a sequel is on the way, with Two-Face played by William Shatner. (The studio provided a review copy.)

BLACK MOUNTAIN-Wilderness Heart

“Play those death wish chords!”  many of the time, I have no Earthly idea what the hell Black mountain are singing about.  They’re like old Black Sabbath on white lightning acid.  It’s bleak, retrorock, heavy and hard, with lyrics about pain and death and nuclear war and all kinds of things I can’t understand.  but I’ve loved this band for years.

On their new release, Wilderness Heart, they continue to morph into a band with range and major acoustic ability.  If you’re searching for much more of the same, this is the wrong album for you.  but if you’re wanting to see a band grow, look here now.

We find much more duets, much more synthswirls, much much more acoustic guitar, a slower pace, and a departure from the slow-build/extended jam songs that marked their first album.  Not that they can’t still rock out like that.  “Roller Coaster” is of this genre, and it’s just as good as anything they’ve ever done.  and it’s the ideal lead-in to the slash and burn motorcycle gang anthem “Let Spirits Ride,” a gimme-Steppenwolf song if I’ve ever heard one.  These songs enter in the album’s second half, after a series of interesting, mellow duets over mostly acoustic instruments.

I was concerned for a while that Black mountain had disbanded, what with lead singer/guitarist Stephen McBean going to do his Pink Mountaintops record and keyboardist/vocalist Amber Webber going on the side with “Lightning Dust,” but this, their third album, put my fears to rest.  They’ve clearly gotten inspiration from their side-projects, moving their heavy sound into new areas, and making their many versatile album so far.

Old Fangs

The Hair Song

Archie’s newest headline Grabbers: death and politics

two recent Archie storylines have gotten them some press outside of the conventional comic sources.

The first uses president Obama and Wannabe Palin to make some kind of point about suitable and unsuitable campaign techniques — but I think it was really just to get an interview at The Huffington Post. The two-part story runs in Archie #616 (out now) and #617 (due February 8 — quite a wait!).

The variant cover (shown below portrays the politicos as superheroes, with the Archie cast in their heroic alter identities as well. It’s a choice that plays into the stereotype of comics as one genre instead of a medium, although it’s not the first time a battle between the two politicians has been expressed in larger-than-life terms.

The story itself, by Alex Simmons, Dan Parent, and rich Koslowski, is notably wordy for a common Archie comic. Archie, pushed by Veronica, and Reggie, backed by psychological manipulator Trula Twyst, are running against each other for student body president. The implications are unpleasant, as the men appear to be pushed around by the scheming and devious women, who use photos of their candidates with the better-known figures to imply false endorsements.

They clearly expect this story to attract new customers, which it why it’s strange that the characters are so badly introduced and so little explained. I know many people get Archie and Veronica, but Betty’s practically nowhere to be seen, and the little-known Trula is worthy of much more of an introduction. everyone comes off badly — spineless Archie, evil Veronica, dumb classmates swayed by a picture instead of positions, and many of all, the guest stars, who consider the whole thing worth dropping everything and concerning Riverdale to set the record straight. I expect it’s a sadly accurate view of how politics today are conducted, and I expect the second issue to make a much more idealistic statement about how things ought to be.

Coming up next week is Life With Archie #6, which managed to make the new York Times for killing miss Grundy (who had recently married principal Weatherbee). The cause? Cancer. This alternate-universe magazine series is getting lots of attention for introducing into the Archie universe all those things that don’t fit in the regular stories: broken relationships, struggles with money, and other kinds of general unpleasantness. (Mr. Lodge, particularly, is a two-dimensional tyrant.)

The adult comments at the Times hate the idea of such “real-world” issues in escapist comics, but teens seem to be enjoying the trauma. After all, compared to the kinds of events they view on shows such as Gossip girl and Glee — teen pregnancies, struggles with coming out, drugs, sex, families broken and reformed — this is still relatively tame. The Archie publishing company considers the magazine for “older readers“, but that is contradicted by them putting pictures of teen stars on the cover under the flimsiest of premises. You can see a preview of this issue online.
