Alyssa Milano’s Hacktivist has new print Date, Serialization plan

Back in June, Hacktivist was revealed as an upcoming graphic book from Archaia. The news came out during the summertime convention season with a star connected as well as a preview ashcan released. Alyssa Milano obviously came up with the concept or motivation or something — the actual innovative team was writers Jackson Lanzing as well as Collin Kelly as well as artist Marcus To. The plot was referred to as a “fast-paced cyber-thriller” about two people who discovered a social network business however are secretly hackers working for social justice. (The preview pages at that link show exactly how tough it is to make utilizing a computer visually interesting.)

The original plan was for the book to debut digitally before being printed as a graphic book next year, however then Boom! obtained Archaia. Now, they’ve revealed that the material will be released as a four-issue restricted series, starting on January 22 at a $3.99 cover price.

The original press release was successful in getting interest from unusual sources — including an interview at Forbes.com (with some fascinating figures on women, digital media, as well as viral marketing) as well as some griping about her attempt to trademark “hacktivist”. I suspect this re-do won’t get rather as much coverage, especially considering that we’re far out of convention season. On the other hand, serializing at this point indicates there’s still time to draw out a collection by summertime 2014, the original publication date. Plus, considering that Boom! as well as Archaia titles are offered on comiXology, it will likely still be offered digitally.

1 COMIC, 2 AUCTIONS: amazing SPIDERMAN #194

right here is one more example I’d like to share with the illustrious comic book neighborhood out there.  A recent auction took location with ComicLink, as well as there were a few sales that stood out to me. Let’s take a look at amazing Spider-Man #194.

We all gather exactly how we want to collect; raw comics or graded “slab” comics.  It’s what makes this hobby fun.  Some collectors like to keep their collections raw as well as be able to checked out their comics.  In comparison, other collectors like to protect their comics with 3rd celebration grading companies for monetary or aesthetic reasons; to each their own.  What I want to compose about is not what you ought to make with your comic books, however rather show you what is going on in the market with recent sales on specific graded books.  people state the space is closing.  As this short article series continues to highlight such sales, we will hopefully see it together.

GRADING COMPANIES

Before I go any type of further, let’s talk about the different grading companies out there.  There are numerous to select from, like CGC, CBCS, PGX, as well as EGS.  Each grading business varies as far as perks, cost, casing, and, a lot of importantly, turnaround time.  So do your due diligence as well as identify which one best fits your collecting goals.  a lot of people select CGC for the look as well as feel of the slab, while others choose CBCS for the faster turnaround time as well as more affordable expense to grade.  Each business has its pros as well as cons.  At the end of the day, the selling value may be what eventually assists you make your decision.  CGC as well as CBCS are the major grading companies in the market as well as a lot of positive between collectors.  You decide.

AMAZING SPIDERMAN #194 (1979)

Let’s talk about a couple of recent sales that made me pause for a moment.  What was when a $1,000 comic book just a couple of years ago, is now $4,000 +/- according to recent sales on GoCollect.  As we already know, amazing Spiderman #194 is the 1st appearance of the Black Cat, likewise known as Felicia Hardy.  A fan-favorite character for numerous collectors, particularly at comic con cosplay events; you will see her everywhere.  try to get a copy for $1,000 nowadays is practically impossible as it seems the cost is continuing to go up in anticipation of a solo film or Spiderman film appearance.  In ComicLink’s spring featured auction, amazing Spiderman #194 was offered twice, one CGC graded as well as 1 CBCS graded.  Let’s look at the results:

The CBCS 9.8 amazing Spiderman #194 sold for $2,617 with a bid count of 26 bids.  Wow!  Not as well shabby.  As a comparison, ending a couple of days earlier, a CGC 9.8 copy sold for $4,200 with a bid count of 36.  Why the disparity?  You tell me.  Albeit, the CBCS example is a direct edition copy, as well as the CGC example is a newsstand.  however if you click on the link, you will see the CBCS copy is completely centered as well as presents well contrast to the CGC copy where it is off-centered a little. The newsstand copy wins here, as it seems.  however a $1,600 difference?  Interesting.

Both CBCS as well as CGC are popular companies compared to the rest, yet have varying differences in sale results.
Both press as well as clean comics as a service before grading.  Both utilize the exact same grading scale when grading as well as encapsulating comic books.  however it seems the public has decided, as well as only time will tell if these types of sales continue.

WRAP UP

Another example to digest.  Please keep in mind this is just a little sample size as well as is only one example.  any type of conclusions should be made knowing that a bigger sample size involving hundreds, preferably thousands, of transactions would come to a much more long-term conclusion.  luckily for us, various graded comic book transactions are happening every week from the different grading companies.  As a result, much more sales examples will be shared in the next installment of this article.

For the most part, I believe this is happening generally in all types of sales between CGC/CBCS; CGC is seeing the higher sales price.  As a result, collectors are grading their collection with CGC versus any type of other competitor.  client service, turnaround time, as well as product high quality are the most considerable game-changers I have heard between the grading companies, so select wisely.  Time will tell.  Either way, I desire you luck in your comic book collecting endeavor.  up until next time you comic book junkies…

Please share your thoughts about the different grading companies.  Do you only gather CBCS? Do you only gather CGC?  Or, do you gather them all?  Does newsstand or direct matter?  Or, are you much more concerned with the general grade?  let the neighborhood know.

HULK #449 IS about TO SPIKE

All that extraordinary Hulk #449 speculation from last summer is about to pay dividends thanks to a major rumor connected to The Falcon and the wintertime Soldier.

The word on the street is that the Thunderbolts will make their debut in the upcoming Disney+ series. While it may only be speculation at this point, this bit of news is likely going to pan out on screen.

Last year, the hot rumor was that marvel Studios was putting together a Thunderbolts feature film and that sparked sales for what has typically been an overlooked issue. considering that then, the Thunderbolts motion picture news front has been relatively quiet, but this will rekindle the speculative fires. As far as the movie, I was skeptical it would pan out, but this most current news is a lot more believable.

In its original iteration, the team was a front for supervillains who conned the world into believing they were heroes. Of course, the team was led by Baron Zemo. actor Daniel Bruhl will reprise his role as Zemo for The Falcon and the wintertime Soldier. It also makes sense that a large part of the show’s plot could revolve around Falcon and Bucky uncovering the Thunderbolts conspiracy.

CURRENT VALUES

At the moment, prices for Hulk #449 are gradually on their way up, but they aren’t absurd just yet.

Two years ago, the graded 9.8 averaged just under $200. considering that then, it blossomed to $285 last year, and that’s where it has steadily remained entering 2020. However, the most recent sale on January 20 was $290. Although that’s only $5 over the current fair market value, it is a sign that this comic is about to pass the $300 FMV mark.

If the 9.4 is any indication, things could get out of hand in a hurry. In 2018, it had an FMV of $47. Last year, it rose to a modest $82. then things got crazy. On January 11, one sold for a record-high $165, eclipsing last year’s high of $113. will that be an outlier or the norm? stay tuned.

DISNEY+ and COLLECTING

It’s clear that marvel is planning to use its slate of Disney+ series to additionally expand and connect to the motion picture universe. To be fair, Kevin Feige has been upfront about that considering that D23 last summer. Not only could the Thunderbolts debut in The Falcon and the wintertime Soldier, but it was confirmed months ago that U.S. agent John F. walker will be featured in the series.

It’s also been reported that WandaVision will directly connect to doctor odd in the Multiverse of Madness. Not only that, but S.W.O.R.D., the intergalactic offshoot of S.H.I.E.L.D., will be incorporated into the show by way of Hulkling’s introduction.

STAY ahead OF THE CURVE

Then there’s Hawkeye, which will feature Kate Bishop. between Kate, Hulkling, and my theory that we could see Scarlet Witch and Vision’s twins, Wiccan and Speed, in WandaVision, it is safe to assume that marvel Studios is using Disney+ to prepare for the young Avengers.

All of this has a substantial impact on the collecting circles because those announcements and rumors fuel the market. So keep your finger on the MCU pulse, and stay ahead of the curve.

Boom! to release Crowdfunding book with no Comic examples

Boom! Studios has announced the upcoming release of a Kickstarter guidance book called six figure Crowdfunding: Why Strangers on the Internet want to give You $100,000. It’s described as

a bold, irreverent, funny how-to guide from bestselling Kickstarter campaign manager Derek Miller (Cyanide & Happiness), co-writer Noelle Pugh (Joking Hazard), and featuring laugh-out-loud illustrations by cartoonist delight Ho.

There have been a number of comic projects that managed to hit these kinds of pledge levels. (I was involved with one, Smut Peddler.) So I was curious to see which of those projects were going to be covered in this release from a comic publisher. Here’s the paragraph from the press release that covers some of the material included:

Six figure Crowdfunding is packed with the collective guidance and pro-tips from world-class campaign leaders who have experience raising over $30 million through successfully managing and executing several high-profile crowdfunding campaigns including Dude Bro party Massacre 3 ($241,071) from Michael E. Peter, James Ashby, Tim Ciancio, Michael Rousselet; Augie and the green Knight ($384,410) from Zach Weiner; OrganATTACK! ($526,274) from Nick Seluk; Superbook ($2,952,508) from Andrew Jiang; G-RO ($3,307,773) from Netta Shalgi; Pillars of Eternity ($3,986,929) from Feargus Uruqhart; and Bones I-IV ($12,380,214) from Ed Pugh. presented in an easy-to-follow, humorous format, Miller and Pugh will instruct you how to maximize your message, mechanics, and marketing.

Oddly, none of those projects noted are comics. They’re movies, games, a tech gadget… the closest they come are Augie and the green Knight, a children’s book that managed to tap into the desire over the past few years to see much more women’s stories.

And that’s a essential piece of guidance that I wonder whether will be included: A lot of people who succeeded had the advantage of doing it earlier than you will. as with any guru who promises to make it easy for you to succeed, I’d be leery about this “modern company book for the modern entrepreneur, packed with hard and truthful truths about crowdfunding that you won’t get from other authors in the space”. I hope they include the numbers from Kickstarter’s own stats: The total success rate is under 36%. Comics does much better than some other fields, with a project success rate of 54%. publishing is under 31%. less than 4% of all projects make six figures or more.

I’ve been notoriously leery about Kickstarter in the past; now I’m suspicious of the “find out how easy it is to make a lot of money online!” method of this promotion. I’m sure there’s an audience for it, and possibly Boom! doesn’t intend for this to have comic creators as its primary audience. It’s a odd first choice for them to start a book publishing line, though, if that isn’t the case.

I’m also concerned that too numerous people already think “all those people got totally free money, so I can get some just by asking for it” without realizing how much work goes into a successful project, and how required it is to already have an audience of followers. possibly I’m not giving the book the benefit of the doubt, and it will be a truthful approach, and the promotion is just ridiculously optimistic.

Six figure Crowdfunding is set to be available July 2018 (although Amazon says end of August). just in time to promote the heck out of it at this year’s San Diego Comic Con!

10 reasons TO DIG feline STEVENS COVERS (+1)

I likes me some excessively melodramatic folk. Sometimes. I likewise liked Harold as well as Maude. one of the biggest films ever about what everybody who listens to feline Stevens wishes to do: attempt suicide.

1. Don’t Be Shy-Pearl Jam

2. Trouble-Pearl Jam. An Eddie Vedder emoting twofer!

3. right here Comes My Baby-Yo La Tengo. From their fantastic “Fakebook” album.

4. dad as well as Son-Leigh Nash. When I was in college, I was listening to this tune over as well as over. I was massively depressed, as well as I couldn’t figure out where he “had to go” to. My roommate came in as well as saw me sitting in the dark hitting rewind on the tape deck, as well as I asked him: “Where is this man going?” My sadistic as well as dry roommate pondered for a few moments, as well as then said: “He’s going to die.” I don’t believe he’s best anymore, however at the time death seemed like a fantastic idea. OH! The joys of heroin!

5. If You want To Sing Out-Ghost Mice. A extremely unusual singalong.

6. Trouble-Kristin Hersh (of throwing Muses). I liked loved loved! this band! as well as Kristin’s solo work is nothing to sneeze at, either.

7. Mr. Brownstone (Guns N’ Roses) & crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne) & The Wind (Cat Stevens)-Tenacious D. Jack Black singing Cat.

8. Trouble-Elliot Smith. The only singer/songwriter much more depressing than Cat!

9. Plastic Jesus/Where Do the kids Play-Jack Johnson

10. peace Train-Gary Jules. keep in mind exactly how Gary turned Tears For Fears’ funeral dirge “Mad World” into a slow-burning, mystical somewhat-less-depressing pop tune that instead of making you want to die, it just made you want to hit yourself in the deal with with a shovel? (See the soundtrack to Donnie Darko.) Well, now he takes the most optimistic, upbeat feline Stevens chant as well as turns it into a slow-burning, mystical somewhat-less-depressing pop tune that instead of making you want to die, it just made you want to hit yourself in the deal with with a shovel. fantastic job!

11. Wild World-Matt Nathanson.

IS BLUE BEETLE worth THE INVESTMENT?

DC on film has been a rather distinct experience, to state the absolute least. This year alone, fans were spoilt with Zack Snyder’s Justice league as well as James Gunn’s The suicide Squad. next year, we are set to feast on The Batman, Aquaman: The lost Kingdom, The Flash as well as Black Adam, starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. However, one job that has been on everybody’s minds just recently is the upcoming Blue Beetle film on HBO Max. Today, I ask a rather easy question: Is Blue Beetle worth the investment?

Who Is Blue Beetle?

In DC mythology, there have been three Blue Beetles including Dan Garrett, Ted Kord, as well as the film’s lead, Jamie Reyes. The history of the blue Beetle mantle is absolutely fascinating, as well as the stuff that might be a film in itself! According to several sources, the upcoming HBO Max film will mainly focus on Reyes.

While Garrett was originally a Charlton Comics character, Reyes very first appeared in unlimited dilemma #3, before making his debut as Blue Beetle two problems later in unlimited dilemma #5.

Reyes’ origin is not dissimilar to that of Spider-Man. He is a teenager with as well much obligation as well as expectations. When a wonderful scarab discovers its method to his front door, the scarab bonds with Reyes, fusing itself to the teenager’s spine.

Is Blue Beetle worth The Investment?

In recent years, I have not invested in a DC comic or character. I discover Warner Bros as well as DC to be extremely unpredictable, where marvel Comics just is not. DC normally announces fifteen projects, as well as end up only creating two. taking a look at you, new Gods. For this reason, above all else, I have shied away from investing in DC. However, Jamie Reyes is a rather distinct diamond in the rough.

Reyes’ very first two appearances are considerably less expensive than you would expect. Of course, these books are not old by any type of stretch of the imagination. unlimited dilemma hit shelves back in 2006, so there are a great deal of copies of these books out there.

Reyes’ very first actual appearance in unlimited dilemma #3 is a rather affordable one, with a 9.8 grade selling for an all-time high of $140 (USD) this June. That said, if you look at the Jim Lee variant of unlimited dilemma #5, you see a pattern that is really rather exciting.

A 9.8 copy of the routine unlimited dilemma #5 just recently offered for $200 (USD) in July of this year. Whereas a 9.8 grade of the Lee variant of the exact same book really offered for $425 (USD) late last month. There is an enhanced demand for the Lee cover as it really features the cover debut of Reyes as the blue Beetle.

There are tons of copies of this book on eBay at the moment, as well as they are priced well below what you would expect. With the film announced, as well as the titular character cast, there is a rather big part of me that is stating to invest in this book, particularly the Jim Lee variant as you might see rather successful as well as quick returns.

If I were you, I’d keep an eye on this book as I understand I will.

THE DEEP DARK WOODS-“Winter Hours”

My respect for Saskatoon’s Deep Dark woods began when I picked “Hang Me Oh Hang Me” as the 38th best album of 2007. I loved the bands smart mix of traditional bluegrass and Americana, which made it sound classic and traditional all at the same time. Lead singer Ryan Boldt sounds as old as Jerry Garcia, but his voice much stronger. He gives the band it’s gravitas, while lead guitarist Burke Barlow gives it its soul.

The sad and slow “Farewell” is almost a lullaby, and it would be the perfect send-off for the album. If it weren’t the lead track! but if forlorn isn’t your bag, make sure you stick around for the second song, the bouncy “Nancy,” a ditty, punctuated by a fiddle solo, that is almost (gasp!) danceable! other noteworthy tracks here include “As I Roved Out,” another sad number, and “All the money I had is Gone,” which sounds like an old country standard, complete with stellar harmonies and fabulous lyrics. By my favorite cut is the 6-minute “How Can I Try.” I can’t use words to describe it. It takes my breath away. From track to track, the album paints a sepia-toned season of log cabins with snow-topped trees and a warm fire at night.

The Deep Dark woods aren’t for everyone, I recognize that. They’ve toured with some pretty on-the-fringe dudes, The Sadies, Utah Phillips, Magnolia electric Co. and The Stills. but if you give them a listen with open ears and open heart, I bet you’ll find what I did: A band totally in love with music, with the talent to spread their joy. This band is the best of its kind, masters of their genre, and well worth your time and money. On the Black Hen label.
